Half a year as au pair in the USA - is it possible?

Question of the week (1 November 2010). Danica from Germany: Is it possible to travel to the USA to become an au pair for only six months?

Dear Aupair World Team,

I will finish school in June 2011 with the university-entrance diploma (Abitur) and I am interested in a 6-month stay as an au pair. Actually, I wanted to go to the USA, but I was told that such a short period of time would not be possible due to the visa. However, on your website there are families who offer a 6-month stay. Therefore, I would like to check whether spending only half a year as an au pair in the US is possible though.

Hello Danica,

Thank you very much for your email. In order to be able to work legally as an au pair in the USA, you need to apply for a J-1 visa. However, you can only apply for this visa if you go through one of the 12 designated US au pair agencies. As far as we know, this visa is always issued for 12 months only and thus a shorter stay is not possible.

To get further information, please contact one of the 12 designated US au pair agencies or their partner agencies in Germany. We recommend that you search and find a nice host family on Aupair World with which you can stay for one year. Then contact one of the 12 designated US au pair agencies to apply for the J-1 visa.
