Obtaining references from au pairs or host families

How to obtain references from a potential au pair or host family.

As Aupair World does not provide any screening either for au pairs or host families, you should ask the au pair or host family for references and - if you like - for a health certificate or a certificate of good conduct.

References from Au Pairs

References from au pairs can be obtained from various sources:

  • teachers,
  • former or current employers,
  • former (or the current) host family,
  • families, your potential au pair has worked for as a babysitter.

Certificate of Good Conduct

In almost every European country the potential au pair will be able to ask his / her local authorities to send you a certificate of good conduct. Simply ask the au pair.

Health Certificate

You can also ask your potential au pair to send you a health certificate issued by his or her local doctor (general practitioner). This document will most likely be in English. Most families are especially concerned in regards of HIV, hepatitis B, drug consumption and bulimia nervosa.

References from Host Families

References from host families can be obtained from

  • former au pairs (the best source)
  • the host mom's / dad's employer
  • the children's teachers
  • a local person or doctor

Certificate of Good Conduct

Even though it's not very common, it might be a good idea to ask the family for a certificate of good conduct.
